I love it &#8211; This post comes from nutrition consultant <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nutrilicious.ca\">Karen Gilma<\/a>n &#8211; all about reducing your meat consumption (which is healthy and also environmentally friendly)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Take it away Karen (not me Karen, her Karen &#8211; confused yet?)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Guest blogger Karen Gilman on reducing your meat consumption:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/drkarenhudes.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/image.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-820\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Have you ever considered reducing the amount of meat you eat and substituting protein-rich legumes such as beans and lentils? These plant-based foods may not be top of mind when you think about protein, but they are excellent sources of this essential nutrient, and contain less fat and fewer calories. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"> So, why should you consider eating less meat? :<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Vegetarian proteins may reduce your risk of\nheart disease by helping you maintain healthy cholesterol levels and lowering\nyour blood pressure. In addition, studies have shown that plant-based foods may\ncut your risk for Type 2 diabetes and obesity, and their high-fibre content\nhelps keep you regular \u2013 a plus for both digestive and general health. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Eliminating meat just one a day a week from\nyour diet offers more than just health benefits: it\u2019s good for the environment,\nand meatless meals usually cost less. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, eating less animal protein\nshouldn\u2019t mean switching to store-bought highly processed faux meat like veggie\nburgers and veggie dogs, which are loaded with salt and hard-to-pronounce\ningredients. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Here are 3 tips on how to reduce your meat intake:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Choose 1 day a week to eat completely meatless. Consider joining the Meatless Monday movement and eliminate meat completely on Mondays.&nbsp; Instead of adding chicken to your lunch-time salad add a cup of chickpeas or instead of making a beef stir fry for dinner use tofu. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Have beans and lentils in the\nhouse. They can be canned or dry &#8211; though canned will make life a little\neasier. Beans are nutritional powerhouses. They are high in protein and fiber,\nand depending on the variety, are a good source of iron, calcium and B\nvitamins. &nbsp;They are a good way to make a\nmeal a little heartier.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Add beans to soups, salads,\nstews or chili. Make black bean tacos instead of chicken tacos or have lentil\nSloppy Joes instead of ground beef Sloppy Joes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Make grains and vegetables the\nfocus of your meals. Prepare a quinoa pilaf with loads of veggies, curry paste\nand coconut milk. Cook up some rice with spinach, fresh tomatoes and feta\ncheese.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>There are no hard and fast rules when it\ncomes to meatless meals.
