{"id":1067,"date":"2021-01-13T13:11:15","date_gmt":"2021-01-13T13:11:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/drkarenhudes.ca\/?p=1067"},"modified":"2024-03-18T17:49:49","modified_gmt":"2024-03-18T17:49:49","slug":"snow-and-back-pain","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/drkarenhudes.ca\/index.php\/2021\/01\/13\/snow-and-back-pain\/","title":{"rendered":"Snow and Back Pain"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>I<strong>s snow causing aches in your shoulders, back and everywhere in between<\/strong>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Karen and I were chatting just the other day about how the clinic always seems to be a bit busier after winter storms. And there\u2019s usually a common culprit: snow shoveling!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Considering January is just getting started, we wanted to provide you with a few tricks to help manage any stiffness or pain you might experience while shoveling snow. Check out the videos to see good and bad lifting techniques in action!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Warm up your muscles!<\/strong> The easiest change can make the biggest difference &#8211; take a few minutes to move around or do some jumping jacks to get your muscles warmed up before you start.<\/li><li><strong>Push, don\u2019t lift!<\/strong> Pushing snow is a lot easier than any lifting so try to push whenever you can.<\/li><li><strong>Lift light to lift right!<\/strong> I don\u2019t know about you, but I\u2019m not training to become a professional snow shoveler! Pushing and lifting smaller amounts of snow is easier on your body.<\/li><li><strong>Pick a good shovel!<\/strong> Using a lightweight, push-style shovel puts less strain on your body. You may also consider using a smaller blade: these are usually lighter in weight and the smaller blade will force you to lift less snow.<\/li><li><strong>Use a wide grip when lifting!<\/strong> This decreases the strain on your body.<\/li><li><strong>Lift with your legs!<\/strong> Try to squat down and bend your knees when you have to lift, driving through your feet to stand. This decreases the strain on your low back.<\/li><li><strong>Shove, don\u2019t throw!<\/strong> Instead of twisting through your low back, push the handle through your hands to unload the snow.<\/li><li><strong>Watch out for any ice!<\/strong> Using salt and sand can help to limit any nasty slips or falls.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Hopefully these tips can help you stay up and moving through the winter months.
